Dear Mayor of Sant Joan d'Alacant, I am writing to request urgent and coordinated action to protect Calle San José and the traditional historic core of Sant Joan d'Alacant. Calle San José does not have a single isolated problem. Several issues currently converge, affecting heritage, safety, mobility and residents’ quality of life: 1. Specific Amendment no. 25 of the General Urban Plan affects the area around Calle San José and the plot located between Calle Quijote and the rear of our homes. Residents have concerns about its impact on the Historic Core, heritage protection, archaeological controls and the urban planning of the area. 2. The pedestrianisation of Calle San José is still pending. We believe it is a necessary measure to protect the historic centre, improve pedestrian safety, recover the human scale of the street and prevent traffic from continuing to damage a traditional urban environment. 3. The new CV-207 bus tender may consolidate or increase the passage of buses through the area around Calle San José and Calle Mayor. Before approving or maintaining this route, less harmful alternatives should be analysed and specific studies on vibrations, noise, heritage impact and safety should be carried out. 4. For years, the street has endured intense traffic, including heavy vehicles, on a narrow historic road with old homes and façades very close to the carriageway. This situation causes noise, vibrations, risks for pedestrians and loss of quality of life. 5. The Municipal Architect’s report of 30 November 2017 had already warned about the effects of heavy traffic and buses on Calle San José and Calle Mayor: vibrations transmitted to foundations, micro-cracks, possible detachments, pollution that does not dissipate properly and noise levels above those permitted for a residential area. The report itself recommended banning general traffic, allowing only access for residents and medium-sized vehicles, expanding pedestrian areas, improving accessibility and removing surface parking with alternatives for residents. For all these reasons, I ask the Town Council: - To adopt immediate measures to divert heavy traffic and buses away from Calle San José and Calle Mayor. - To promote the pedestrianisation of Calle San José with accessibility, safety and heritage protection criteria. - To review the municipal position on the CV-207 tender and request alternative routes compatible with the historic core. - To take into account the conclusions of the 2017 municipal technical report. - To provide all public documentation related to the urban planning, mobility and structural safety files affecting Calle San José. - To protect the historic core of Sant Joan d'Alacant as required by urban planning and heritage regulations. This request is not intended as confrontation, but as a call for institutional responsibility. Calle San José is part of the town’s historic memory and needs a serious, transparent and effective public response. Yours sincerely, [Your name]
